Frequently Asked Questions

We understand that trying a new sport can sometimes be daunting, and you want to make sure you get it right from the start. We have put together a group of questions that we often hear to best answer them for you and help you feel confident in your choice to begin Cheerleading with Storm!

Can I just try a class?

Yes! We encourage anyone interested in joining to get in contact with the office. We can organise for you to come down and try out a class to see if you like it – completely free of charge or commitment.

When do you compete?

Different teams compete different amountsacross the year. Some do 1-2 performances, some do 7 or 8 performances. Most events are held from June – November at local competitions. We also take some teams interstate for competitions such as the National Championships if they are not held in Melbourne. Check out our Info Pack or Contact Us for more specific details!

Do I need a Uniform?

Our Ruby athletes don’t need a training top or uniform. Emerald athletes also don’t require a competition uniform as they perform in their Club t-shirts, but our All Star Amethyst and Diamond teams are required to purchase a uniform through the Pro Shop. Second-hand uniforms are sometimes available so please check with the office.

How much is it?

Storm aims to provide affordable tuition for our athletes and their families. Our annual schedule operates similar to school terms, so a typical year includes an initial enrolment fee and set fortnightly tuition payments. Pricing is based on hours spent training in the gym, and you can see the breakdown in our information pack. Competitive athletes will also have all related competition costs (that are bundled into a Comp Pack) and uniform costs.

Will I train every week?

Yes. If you enrol in a competitive squad we ask you to attend every training session throughout the year. Cheerleading is a team sport so if one member of the team is absent, the team will not be able to practice as everyone is necessary in each stunt of a routine!

Do I need insurance?

Part of the enrolment fee covers your personal accident insurance. We also provide additional coverage for our students for all practice, competitions, performances & other events. We don’t provide Ambulance cover, so that is something we highly recommend athletes get before they begin.

Do I have to be flexible?

This is one of the most common questions we get! Absolutely not. Being flexible and pulling shapes is a great skill, but it is usually taught over time. For all our teams we ensure that fitness, flex and other components are taught within all our classes.

What level am I?

That depends on a number of things including whether an All Star program is right for you. When we recommend a squad for someone, the decision is usually based on the level of training you can handle, any past cheerleading or gymnastics experience and any skills you may currently have. As an example, a back handspring is usually required for a level 2 team but further requirements such as past cheer experience may also be needed to train safely on a Performance team. If you’re not sure, contact us and we can help suggest some options for you!

Who are the coaches?

All of our staff are carefully selected and highly skilled in coaching. All of our employees and any volunteers have Working With Children Checks, and our coaching staff hold the relevant Cheerleading Coaching credentials for the teams they coach. You can find out a bit more about specific staff members here!

Storm Elite acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the land on which our gyms are located, and their connections to land, sea and community. We pay our respect to their Elders past and present and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today.
